Maybe in the IU case, but I don’t see it in the others. Occam’s razor suggests to me the commonality of the three cases being the decision maker thinking “this artist is going to bring me lots of flak, and it’s just not worth the hassle.”
I think that's all it is--which shows you that a lot of arts presenters aren't really into art as such, but are instead looking to produce cultural capital for themselves personally, for towns or institutions, etc., and so are looking for something that is both au courant AND inoffensive that serves that purpose.
I wonder how much of this cancelling has to do with the fear of making donors uncomfortable?
