As a 25% Scotsman myself, I note the resemblance between the (50% Scots) Trump-like character in the opera and the 100% Scotsman Fat Bastard, adversary of Austin Powers in the 2nd and 3rd instalment of Mike Myers' trilogy.

I enjoyed my time in the "hot dog eater" rabbit hole. As best I can google, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau dissed Province of Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa with this put-down in 1974. The two were nominally allies, but with a long history of bad blood between them. Trudeau was riffing off a magazine cover photo of Bourassa eating a hot dog.

"Mangeur de hot dogs" is often interpreted as elitist Trudeau teasing Bourassa about his working class background. As a Trudeauphile, I interpret the put-down a bit more charitably as teasing Bourassa about trying to reclaim his working class bona fides after marrying into the Simard shipbuilding fortune and earning degrees from Oxford and Harvard and/or teasing Bourassa about having to work so hard pretending to be a regular guy with a staged photo eating a hot dog when elitist Trudeau had the knack of appealing from highest to lowest without even trying. (Admittedly, many other Canadians including Quebecers from highest to lowest hated Trudeau.)

I have many household tasks to complete today. So, thanks for giving me today's highlight even if I'm now even further behind on my to-do list.
